About the Senator

Biography

Senator Julian McGauran was born in the country town of Traralgon, in Gippsland Victoria where he grew up on his family's property. He attended primary school in Traralgon and secondary school at Xavier College Melbourne. His tertiary education was at Monash University obtaining a Bachelor of Economics and he is a Certified Practicing Accountant with the Australian Society of Accountants.

In 1985 Senator McGauran was elected for a three year term to the Melbourne City Council as a representative of the Central Business District. From 1986 to 1988 he was also a Board Member of the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce.

Senator McGauran was first elected to the Senate in 1987 while still a Melbourne City Councillor and served until 1990. In 1990 due to the circumstances of an historic agreement forming a Coalition Senate ticket he was required to step out of Parliament for three years. In 1993 he was re-elected to the Senate on the Coalition Senate ticket.
